I can't say I've ever been obsessed with anything to the degree described in the third paragraph, not even in the best job I ever had. I enjoyed what I did and the time passed quickly and pleasurably, but I never missed any meals. (Even if some of them were delayed a bit.)
But to some extent, drumming does for me what painting did for Winston Churchill. Even if it doesn't inspire joy, the way it does for the prodigies and the professionals I've seen and heard from, it does keep my mind occupied while I'm doing it. Drumming diverts me from the kind of thoughts I can fall into, so I'm OK with it.
