Mike Barnes has a quick lesson on a basic bossa nova beat, and I'm trying to follow his instructions because with his lessons, either I learn right away or I believe I know how to learn it going forward.
The hi-hat is simple 8th notes, and the kick is simple And-1, And-3. The left hand plays a cross-stick in the first bar on 1, the And of 2, 4, and in the second bar on 2 and the And of 3. I've been trying to learn how to do all that for days, and while I can put any two of the three together, 3 of 3 is more than I can do so far. I did make some progress this evening, though, so I guess I can console myself by saying I got a little bit better today.
